CAS versions differ in hardware and security functions. State the exact CAS designation, vehicle, original unit status and available replacement. A model name alone is not a cloning approval, and engine ECU support does not imply CAS support.

E-series models such as the E60, E90 or E70 use the Car Access System CAS in the generations CAS1 to CAS3+. Some early F-series models such as the F01 and F10 use CAS4. Models of the F2x and F3x ranges, for example the F20 and F30, use the front electronic module FEM; later models use the body domain controller BDC. These are different units with different procedures. Support for one of them does not imply support for another.
Why the engine control unit matters
CAS and engine control unit (DME/DDE) share a secret value, the ISN. If either unit is replaced, this pairing must be restored. That is why we also ask for the engine control unit in a CAS enquiry.
Typical situations
- The key is no longer recognised and the engine does not start.
- Ignition, central locking or comfort functions fail after water damage or a voltage problem.
- A used CAS was fitted and the vehicle does not accept it.
